Geburtstagsbrunch

Ohweh. Aber dafür lecker Bilder und Inspiration

Today: Pictures from our birthday brunch :-)

We married in June. It was a wonderful day with great people, the best possible weather and lots of fun. Rest of the entry will be in german, but the pictures are international ;-)

(Scroll down for english version.)

So denn: Crêpes!

3 hungrige Veganer:
  • 500 g Mehl
  • 4 gehäufte EL Stärke
  • 1 EL Vanillezucker
  • 2 EL Zucker
  • 2 EL Margarine (Alsan)
  • 1 Prise Salz
  • 1 Liter Pflanzenmilch (wir hatten Soja-Hafer)

So geht's:
Left with the choice between taking time for taking a good picture or eating, I will always choose the latter.

February 2nd is Candlemas, Lichtmess, Chandeleur, or Imbolc. In any case, there seems to be a french tradition of eating crêpes today, and as good traditions need to be spread all over the world - crêpes, here we go! I bought the tool in form of a T for making crêpes today, it really helped to make them perfectly thin. The recipe is basically the one from this website: vegetarisme.fr

Ingredients for 6 persons or 3 hungry vegans:
  • 500 g flour
  • 4 heaped tablespoons starch
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla sugar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons margarine
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 L plant milk (we used soy-oat milk)

What to do:
  1. Put all ingredients but the milk in a big bowl (sift the starch) and mix. Add the milk while stirring.
  2. Stir (easiest using a kitchen machine) until all lumps have disappeared. Let the mixture rest in the fridge for 30-120 minutes.
  3. Heat one or two big pans on the stove, at about 2/3 of the maximum heat. If your pan is coated, you don't need extra fat for the pan. Place a little of the batter in a pan and spread thinly using the crêpe-T-tool. When the upper side has "dried" and the borders can be detached from the pan, flip the crêpe until is is done from the other side as well.
  4. Enjoy with sugar&cinnamon, bananas, chocolate spread, jam, peanut butter... - or spinach and other salty wrappable things.

3rd Veganniversary

As a vegan, you have to be happy every day that you're alive, because, as everybody knows, it's no way possible to survive at all on a vegan diet. No proteins and such, you know. So, every year that you survive has to be celebrated! Manuel's veganniversary is in January, but we celebrated a bit later. Pictures are not too good, because he was late from the airport and we were terribly hungry ;-)

First: Tofu fish sticks (the german recipe can be found here) with a bit of salad (carrots & apple) and remoulade (vegan mayonnaise I won at the Paris Vegan Day with cucumber and herbs).

Second: Mac & Cheese with alibi green stuff (spinach). Still have sauerkraut left over!

Third: Little layer cake with vanilla pudding and blueberries. The dough I made as in this recipe, the pudding as described here, without the chocolate, but with vanilla soy milk and some extra vanilla. The blueberries I found somewhere in my freezer...

Vegan Pizza Day

Today is Vegan Pizza Day! (See the page on Facebook.) Therefore we made pizza. And strawberry ice cream. No recipe today, just a quick step-by-step documentation.

1. Prepare yeast dough and let rise.

2. Spread on baking sheet and add tons of tasty vegetables.

3. Prepare Hefeschmeeeeelz! and add over Pizza. Hefeschmelz is a sauce made from oil/margarine, flour,  nutritinal yeast, and spices, I think it is called nooch sauce in the Post Punk Kitchen forum.

4. Bake and enjoy :-)

New Year

In Berlin, lots of crazy people seem to crawl out of their hiding places in the last night of the year, and make a lot of noise. We are both no fans of firecrackers and fireworks. While they might look nice, there are so many more useful things one could do with all that money that is burnt in explosions each year, and the noise is just annoying. Therefore we decided to have a quiet evening at Viasko, which is a relatively new restaurant in Berlin and offered lots of food and company for this special night.

As expected, the evening was wonderful. The food was fantastic - soup, salads, sushi, canapés, dips, BBQ outside, soy "Geschnetzeltes" with red cabbage and bread dumplings, gnocchi. Cake and Black Forest mousse au chocolat.

Every table even got their own little chocolate fondue!

Nice people all around, plus good music - All in all a perfect evening.

We wish you all a Happy New Year! May it be full of happiness and love towards you and all creatures around you.

Paris Vegan Day

The highlight of the year, the Paris Vegan Day, was last sunday. Since we first heard about it, we planned on going there together. For some strange reason, the vegans in Paris always place their events on dates on which I am not in the city, but not this time!

So what did we do? A lot! I hope I won't forget half of it. We...

  • arrived at  La Bellevilloise shortly after 11. The program began at 11, and there were already many people present.
  • had brunch at the restaurant. For 29 Euros there were lots and lots of very delicious foods, fruit juices and hot drinks. I saw some honey standing around, but apart from that it was perfect.
  • missed Isa Chandra Moskowitz' cooking show because the program that I printed out in the morning did not seem to be the latest version.
  • saw Terry Hope Romero's cooking show, which was really great. It was a bit complicated because it was translated into french, so people seemed to have some difficulties to be totally enthusiastic about it.
  • forgot to bring a cookbook from the PPK authors to let them sign it. Gnarf.
  • visited the stands of many exhibitors who all brought their delicious vegan goodies.
  • were amazed about the animal rights activists' stands downstairs - If there is so much good activism and information in France, how can there still be foie gras and the likes?
  • had tasty Sojami ice cream.
  • said hi to lovely tattoo artist Punky.
  • met friends from France, Germany, and Switzerland.
  • did not see much of the fashion show because it was so crowded.
  • tried tasty food at the Vegusto stand.
  • wondered why so many people were standing outside until we realized that the location was too full at a certain time to let everyone in.
  • saw some more good cooking shows of the VG-Zone creators.
  • tasted their incredibly good caribbean sponge cake, together with a nice cup of Løv tea.
  • could not resist a spring roll and a plate of other food from the Loving Hut.
  • managed to get the very last book sold by Melisser Elliott. It is called "The Vegan Girl's Guide To Life" and is incredibly cute.
  • won a great price at the tombola (food from un monde vegan, bathroom fun from Lush, a cute T-Shirt from Herbivore
Congratulations to the organizors of the PVD! This was a great event, and surely very stressful! I totally understand the little chaotic things with the program and dying printers and stuff - I never imagined that the event would be that big.

All in all, it was a wonderful day that made us roll home rather than walk. Do we really have to wait a whole year now for the next PVD? Far too long!
